INGREDIENTS:

• 4 ripe mangoes, peeled, seeded and cubed
• 3/4 cup simple syrup (use less if you prefer it to be less sweet so adjust accordingly)
  
• 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
• 2 tbsp cream

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place mangoes in a food processor, and puree. I recommend processing the mangoes longer to make the end result smoother in texture.
2. Pour in simple syrup, cream and lime juice, then puree until smooth.
   
3. Place in an ice-cream maker and freeze thoroughly.
4. Serve with strawberries or even some fresh grated coconut.

Your family will love this chicken cordon blue!

This is a serving for 4 so you can adjust the recipe accordingly.

INGREDIENTS:

• 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts
• 4 slices ham (recommend honey ham)
• 4 slices Swiss cheese
• 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
• 3/4 tsp paprika
• 1/4 cup butter
• 1/3 cup dry white wine (sometimes I leave this out)
  
• 3/4 tsp chicken bouillon granules
• 2 tsp cornstarch
• 2/3 cup heavy whipping cream

DIRECTIONS:

1. Pound chicken breasts if they are too thick. Place a slice of ham and cheese on each chicken breasts. Fold the edges of the chicken over the filling. You can secure it with toothpicks if you wish but I find it unnecessary.
2. Mix the flour and paprika in a bowl and coat the chicken pieces evenly.
3. Heat the butter over high heat in a skillet. Cook the chicken until browned on all sides. Add the wine and bouillon granules. Reduce heat to low and cover the skillet. Let it simmer for 30 minutes, until chicken is cooked. You will know when it’s cooked when the meat is no longer pink and juices run clear.
4. Transfer the breasts to a warm platter. If you used toothpicks, you will need to remove them. Blend the cornstarch with the cream in a small bowl, and whisk slowly into the skillet. Cook, stirring it until it thickens and pour over the chicken.
5. Serve the chicken cordon blue warm with mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Some people say that laptops do not have a big enough storage space but these days you can easily get 250GB on a laptop. Work at home mothers should definitely consider setting a marketing plan for their home business venture as this is pivotal in determining whether or not their business succeeds. Here are some marketing plan examples:

1. Believe In Your Product

Be proud of your business and the work you do. Put in lots of effort and learn all that you can about your trade. You should not be shy or embarrassed by it. I mentioned this before but anyway I will say it again, it is extremely important that you believe in your product because it is very difficult to convince someone to purchase something you yourself don’t believe in. If you have confidence in your product, it will show when you are selling it.

2. The Power Of Testimonials

Whenever I shop online or browse through catalogs, I will always spend some time reading through the company’s testimonials from past customers. It is always easier to believe what real customers say regarding a particular product, rather than what the company who is selling it says. That said, you should try to use testimonials on your website, brochures and even during presentations. I think success stories are always good to gain the confidence of potential customers.

3. Image Is Everything

I believe how you dress and carry yourself reflects on your personality as well. For instance, if your finger nails are always dirty then it reflects that you do not care about personal hygiene. The same goes for a business. If you walk into a restaurant with roaches and flies everywhere, would you still ask for a meal or would you leave and call the health inspectors? Also, the product packaging must match the price tag. If you order a $500 necklace from an online store, would you expect it to arrive in a white plastic bag? Or a nicely wrapped box adorned with ribbons? This is especially true for online stores where the layout of your site is the first image you project to customers. So you would want to make that a nice image, but remember to keep things simple and don’t overdo it.

4. Know What You Are Talking About

Another important tip of my marketing plan examples is you should always know your product inside out. The best is if you have personal knowledge and experience using the product. You can attend courses or conferences to gain extra knowledge so that you will be more confident when answering customers’ questions. You do not want to be labelled a fraud so if you do not have any time to learn about the product you are selling, then you should hire professionals to do it for you.

5. Bait Your Customers With Samples

This is an excellent example of a company marketing plan. This works especially well if you are selling skincare products, hair products, perfumes or even cookies. You can pass out samples so that customers can try a little bit of the product and leave them wanting for more. Then hopefully they will purchase the products from you once they find out how wonderful your product is.

I believe that home business moms will do well when they have their marketing plan examples all lined up in place. These marketing methods are all important business success factors which will surely impact your small business success rate.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C)
2. Rub butter all over chicken.
3. Add basil and pepper to taste.
4. Stuff the chicken cavity with onions, carrots and garlic.
5. Place potatoes at the side of the roasting dish, around the chicken.
6. Pour the chicken stock into the roasting dish and all over the chicken.
7. Roast in the preheated oven for about 2 hours or so, or until chicken is cooked and juices run clear.
8. You can also baste the herbed chicken with chicken stock a couple of times during the cooking time.
9. When chicken is cooked, discard items which were stuffed inside the cavity. Serve with salad or rice for a scrumptious meal.

Anyway, we sleep in the master bedroom and the second room we use it as a closet. As for the third room which is really tiny, we store our junk (boxes, comic books, golf clubs, mahjong set, vacuum, etc) in it. Jake suggested I convert that room into my home office. Not a bad idea for now, I must say. Although I will need to sort out where to store away our junk.

I looked around and started jotting down things I will need in order to transform it into an appropriate work space. Here are the items I think I will need and I hope it will give you some sort of idea on how to organize your home office:

• Desk or workcenter

I prefer a big desk actually but maybe for the size of my work space, I can only afford to get a medium sized one. I prefer one without the extra tools. Just a plain and simple one with a couple of drawers. It needs to be big enough to fit my laptop and have extra space at the sides for my paperwork.

• Chair

It must be leather and very comfortable so that I do not get any back pains. I prefer those with the roller wheels and armrests. It should also have a seat-height adjustment function to fit my posture correctly.

• Computer

If you do not already have one, then you may wonder; desktop or laptop? I will give some opinions on this subject in future entries. As for me, I will use my existing personal laptop for my business too since I am just starting out and I do not have the luxury of a big budget. If you are not used to a computer, then you better start learning. A computer is a necessity in today’s world.



• Printer/Scanner/Photocopier/Fax Machine

Get yourself one of these multifunction machines especially if your work space is limited, like mine. It saves space and has all the functions you need to run a business. There are plenty in the market so you have numerous options. If you are buying a new computer for your business, then ask if they also sell multifunction printers. Most likely they can offer you a better deal when you purchase it together with the computer.

• Folders/Binders

How to organize your home office files? Get a few folders or binders, whichever you may prefer because even in this age of technology, you will still need to file your bills, invoices and important contracts. If you organize and keep them safely in folders/binders then they are less likely to disappear when you need to use them.

• Post-it notes

I think a genius invented these! Use it to jot down important tasks and post it on the wall or on the side of your computer monitor to serve as a reminder.

• Trashcan

Keep one beside your desk in your home office so that you don’t have to waste time walking to the kitchen to throw away your trash.

• Phone line

If you want to use your home phone line as your business line as well, it should be fine. But I think if you can afford it, then it is better to get a separate phone line, one just for your business calls. This allows you to easily track the costs of your business calls and you will project a more professional image when your clients or suppliers call you. Alternatively, you can get an additional mobile phone and a mobile line for your business instead of a land line.

• Whiteboard

I am going to get one so that I can plan out my daily schedule on it. That way I will know what I need to get done each day and the time limit for it. Also, if Jake needs to locate me, then by looking at my work schedule, he will be able to guess my whereabouts for the day.

• Alarm clock

I believe this is something you may not consider when you are thinking about how to organize your home office. I will place this on my desk and set a time for it. Let’s say 3PM so everyday when the alarm goes off at 3PM, I will stop whatever I am doing and leave my work space for the day. This allows me to separate my time clearly between work and family. It is easier said than done, yes I know but my fingers are crossed! Try it out and let me know if it works.

• Office supplies such as pens, markers, paper, envelopes, etc

I will purchase some of these and store it in my work space as I believe it will come in handy when my business gets going.

I am sure I will need more things to sustain my business as it grows but for now, I think the list above is adequate to get me started on my home business. Follow these tips on how to organize your home office and you should be fine (fingers crossed!)

I am also in the midst of deciding which product I should sell for my soon-to-be set up home business. But what kind of unique functional products should I offer? I think the best product would be one which I have a passion for so that I will enjoy investing time and hard work in it. Furthermore, if it is a product which I have knowledge in then when customers have any inquiries, I will sound like a pro answering them.

In a nutshell, there are three options you can contemplate when selecting what to sell:

1. Selling ideas for new products. This is not a preferred option for people who are just starting out as it requires a lot of money and takes a lot of time and also manpower. However, there are a lot of companies looking for new products in the market. So if you can create your own unique functional products which cannot be found for sale elsewhere, then you will be able to make a lot of money. For example, the fashion industry is a big industry so you should look into creating new fashion products.
   
2. Wholesale products for resale. This means buying a product which someone else has created then reselling it to consumers. This option is the fastest for you to get your business going. Sadly, this also means that numerous other people will be selling the same product as you. So in order to be successful, you must market the product in an innovative way and maybe find a way to improve the product or make it different from the ones in the market.
3. Reputable affiliate programs whereby you join up and resell other people’s products. This option may be the easiest way to earn money but you are limited in what you can offer and what you can do with the product in terms of marketing. There are online sites such as affiliatescout.com and affiliateguide.com, which offer a number of affiliate programs for different sorts of products.

You can use the three options above as a guideline to determine what unique functional products you can sell with your home business. The opportunities are endless but be sure that you believe in the product yourself, as it is difficult to convince someone else to purchase something you yourself do not believe in.

Well, yes, those are some of the benefits but there are also certain issues which could arise when you are a work at home mum. These issues are normally related to how well you are at managing your time daily. I listed out a few of the issues together with my recommended tips on time management. I hope they prove helpful if you find yourself in those situations one day.

Problem No.1: You work until the wee hours of the morning.

When you are a work at home mum, sometimes it is difficult to draw a line between time for work and time for family. Usually when you work in an office, you will leave your work at the office and come home then return to the office the next day to continue your work. Unfortunately, when you work at home, sometimes work overflows into family time. Instead of spending more time with the family (remember that this was the reason you wanted to work at home in the first place), in the end you neglect your family more!

Set an alarm clock to remind you when it's family time

The Solution:

Create a work schedule and stick to it! You can designate a specific period of time a day when you can work and if you can’t finish your work then leave it for the next day. This requires some discipline and self-control especially if you are a workaholic or perfectionist. You can also set an alarm clock on your desk and when the alarm goes off, shut down your computer and close those files, then leave your home office/work space and get ready to divert all your attention to your family.

Problem No.2: Putting off household chores or not having enough time to get them done.

When you had just one job which is full-time Mum, you had the whole day to complete household chores. Now that you are a full-time Mum and part-time home business owner, it seems like 24 hours a day is just not enough! It is hard to imagine having to pay bills, send out customers’ orders, iron the clothes, cook dinner, help Junior with his Math homework and deal with difficult suppliers all in one day. In the end, you forget to do the laundry and throw out the trash (wait a minute, isn’t this your hubby’s job?), so you end up being a mess in the eyes of your family.

The Solution:

Make a to-do-list to help you prioritize and get more organized. You can set a time limit for each task. For instance, iron clothes from 10am to 11am. This will help you complete the required work tasks and household chores within the designated time limit. If you find that you can complete the tasks within a shorter time period, then you will have some extra time at the end of the day to relax. The benefit is not only that you will be able to handle chores and work tasks well but it also helps you to become better at managing your time daily and become more productive.

Problem No.3: Your kids constantly want your attention.

If your kids are still young then they may not be able to understand that you are running a business from home because for most kids, working means leaving the house in the morning in a office suit and coming home in the late afternoons. Therefore, they may want your attention every single minute of the day since you are always home. Some home business moms find it hard to say “No” to their children and end up putting off their work to cater to their child’s every whim. In the end, their home businesses fail due to lack of effort. If they follow these simple time management tips, then they can avoid this unfortunate consequence.

The Solution:

Explain to your kids that you are now also running a home business and so some of your time will be spent doing serious work chores. Let them know that you will still be around the house but you need a few hours of uninterrupted time each day to make more money for the family. If your kids are a bit older, you can also get them involved in more menial tasks for your business such as tying ribbons on order packages. Another way is to provide a distraction for your kids so you can work peacefully. You can let them watch cartoons on TV or send them to art classes at the local community center.

You as a work at home mum should not be discouraged by the potential problems I mentioned above. I think they are just minor setbacks and with some discipline and effort from yourself, as well as support from your family, they could be overcomed easily. With that in mind, I thought of a few creative child care solutions for work at home mothers to consider when and if the need arises. These are also very useful time management tips to help work at home mothers balance their precious time. Here they are:

• Get your hubby/spouse to help! If you are a work from home mom running a wedding planning business or freelance interior designing and you have to meet clients to discuss over the details, you can schedule the appointment later in the evenings when your husband/spouse is back from work. Get his help to watch over the kids for a couple of hours. Better yet, send the hubby and kids to the movies for a bonding session while you meet clients for work at an adjacent coffeehouse.

Let your husband and child have a bonding session while you attend meetings

• Get to know other work at home mothers in your neighbourhood and build a rapport with them. Then, suggest forming a child care network. Each work at home mum can spare a certain amount of time a week (say 1pm to 3pm on a Monday for work at home mum 1) in her schedule to babysit other work at home mothers’ kids. If you have to meet a supplier, then schedule it on Monday, 1pm and drop off your kids to the work at home mum 1’s home while you go off dealing with work. Anyone who needs a babysitter on that particular day can drop their kids off at work at home mum 1’s home as well.

• If your home based business does not require you to leave your home, you can hire a local high school student to come over and play with your kids while you work in your home office. This creative child care option allows you some quiet time to make important phone calls or send out urgent emails to customers, suppliers and the like. If anything unfortunate happens, you are just ten feet away and your kids will not dare to cause a racket knowing that you are just in the next room.

• Enrol your kids in art classes, ballet classes, bible study and so on! This gives you the flexibility to run work errands and meet clients/suppliers while your kids are learning new skills and making new friends. You can check your local library, community center or place of worship for free or low costing classes. In the end, you can get important work done and your kids will learn a new trade at the same time.

I guess the only thing to remember no matter which child care solution you choose is to always run a background check on the people whom you are handing your kids to. Make sure they are trustworthy and will not harm your kids in any way. Ask around for recommendations from your close and trusted friends. Also, look around the surroundings and make sure the place feels safe. If you have any bad feelings towards a particular sitter, then trust your instincts!

Scam #1: Envelope Stuffing

Ahhh…the classic work at home business scams. I am pretty sure we have all came across this scam at least once before. You read an advertisement or a junk mail declaring that you can earn $1-$2 for each envelope you stuff. Sounds like easy money, right? Think again. Usually, you need to pay a start-up fee of around $30 or more to join the envelope stuffing program. When you receive the start-up package, you realize that the instruction asks you to spread the word about this envelope stuffing business, then you will get paid. The truth is that they want you to help them earn the start-up fees by sending out the same junk mail you received in the first place! The trick is to get your start-up fee (your money!) first before you figure out how this home based business scam really works.

Scam #2 : Processing Medical Bills

This home business scam requires you to pay anywhere from $300 to $900 for the tools you need to start your own medical billing service at home. They will promise you some high-tech billing software as well as a list of potential clients in your area. Don’t you think that most medical institutions would process their own medical bills or outsource the processing to a legitimate company, and not individuals with no experience or knowledge whatsoever? When the package arrives (if it ever does!), you will find that the software is outdated or does not work at all and the list of clients is just wrong. I believe you will never be able to get your money back with this one.

Say "No" to scams!

Scam #3 : Craft Assembly

In this home based business scam, you are told you will be paid an extremely high rate for every toy, doll, jewelry or other craft item you assemble at home. BUT first (there is always a BUT), you will need to pay a fee to receive a starter pack which includes instructions and parts. When you have finished assembling the product, you are told by the company that they do not meet their specifications so you will not be paid for it. The truth is you will never be able to meet their expectations because the scam makes money by selling the starter packs. In the end, you are left with a bunch of low quality products sitting in your living room.

Scam #4 : Data Entry

I have seen advertisements and postings for data entry positions countless times on the Internet and even in online employment sites. All you need to do is just pay $10 to receive a training package and they would send me all the training materials. You should also note that the job description is normally very vague and no experience is required. There was once when I emailed the person in charge and requested for more information on the job. I immediately received a reply saying that I have been hired and I just need to pay a small sum to get started right away. Wow! That easy?? The “job description” is normally that you will need to send out advertisements and postings similar to the one you received to other unsuspecting victims. Once they pay up the $10, then you will get half of the money and the person who recruited you will receive half as well.

Scam #5 : Email Processing

This scam is actually similar to the classic envelope stuffing scam mentioned above. As usual you will be required to pay an upfront fee of about let’s say $49.95 to receive instructions and an email distribution list. The instructions will teach you how to process the emails and you will supposedly get about $25 for each email processed! Wow. Sounds like the ideal work at home job, right? WRONG!! The instructions they send you are actually on how to spam other people’s emails with the same advertisement which prompted you to pay $49.95 in the first place. Then when another unsuspecting person (like yourself) takes the bait and pays $49.95, the scum spam company will pay you your $25. MAYBE?

Ask yourself, is that the kind of work at home job you want to spend your precious time doing? Is it a genuine turnkey home business for moms? Is it ethical? Is it legal? You are actually associating yourself with a con if you join such work at home business scams, which disguise themselves as opportunities. One thing working from home moms should know is that there is no shortcut to success. Yes, sometimes with luck you can get there quicker than others but almost all of the time, it takes hard work and then some.

Here are some things to remember when you are considering your business names ideas:

• The name should represent the product you are selling or the image you want it to portray.

• Your target market must be able to identify and relate to the name. For example, if your target market is trendy young adults but your business name is old-fashioned, then it might not fit well.

• Think of catchy business names. Something easy to remember and easy to spell. If the name is too difficult to pronounce, then your business will have a hard time getting promoted through word of mouth.

• Use unique business names to show originality and for it to stand out in the crowd. Try not to use cliches or copy someone else’s business name! I once saw a coffee place with the name StarBean and it had me wondering, did they combine STARbucks and CoffeeBEAN to get the name?

• Stick with your name. Do not come up with a name which you will regret later on and want to change. You would want to keep the name for a long time as it is not wise to change the business name often. Your customers will have trouble keeping up with the name changes and might not be able to locate you for future purchases.

• Do not ridicule your product with a silly business name. Even though the idea is to select catchy business names but remember that you want to emphasize the positive aspects of your product so people will be keen to purchase it.

Lastly, do have fun with it! Work at home mothers can actually have a brainstorming session with their family and friends to come up with some catchy business names ideas. For a work at home mum, I think it is really like naming your first born. Just that in this case, it is not a child but your first home business

Before you create a business plan, create a list of benefits to give you the boost to do it. I have listed out a few reasons WHY a business plan is important:

1. To obtain a loan from the bank. If you were to go to a bank to apply for a business loan, they will need to see a detailed business plan showing your profit projection and competitors’ analysis. Otherwise, how will the bank be able to determine whether or not your business can handle loan repayments? So preparing a business plan for such situations is crucial.

2. To manage your money properly. With a business plan, you can easily see which aspects in your business need more funds. By creating a business plan, you can also track what the business invested in. This is useful to ensure that you do not go over the limit. Imagine yourself at the local supermarket getting some groceries. For me, if I do not make a list of items to buy, I will usually end up with a cart full of things I do not need but grabbed along the way! Furthermore, if you have a business partner(s), then they would definitely want to know where all the money went.

3. To know what needs to get done everyday to make your business grow. I suggest making a business plan which includes a to-do-list and put it somewhere strategic to remind you of your daily tasks. This enables you to prioritize your tasks accordingly and you won’t overlook on anything important. For me, I create a to-do-list everyday because I have a lot of things I need to get done and sometimes I will forget if I don’t jot it down. I think to-do-lists are useful for home business moms in particular because they have to manage between picking up their kids from school, grocery shopping, household chores, paying bills and so on.

4. To understand if your business will make you money. You need to research on your product, target market and competitors to see if your business will be profitable. If you do not have a clear understanding of these crucial aspects then it will be difficult for you to market your product to your targeted customers.

That said, preparing a business plan should be one of the first steps that work at home mums take towards starting a home business. Find out how to create a business plan and start doing it today. When you create a business plan properly, you will know what needs to get done and how long you take to achieve a certain goal. I think this will help increase your productivity and put you work at home mums out there on the highway to success!

I stumbled upon a delicious strawberry cheesecake recipe a long time ago and I have tweaked it over time to my own perceived perfection. Heh.

My loved ones enjoy the strawberry cheesecake so much that I always have to make two batches at one go. Otherwise, there is just not enough to go around! Try it out and let me know what you think. If yours gets rave reviews then you can consider making it your home business. I know a few Moms who does food catering to offices for lunch and selling cakes, pastries and cookies as an extra income. If it is what you are good at, then exploit it!

Here is the Strawberry Cheesecake recipe:

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degree F (175 degree C).
2. Grease a springform pan.
3. Mix cracker crumbs with melted butter, sugar and cinnamon. Press onto the bottom of the pan.
4. Mix cream cheese with sugar until smooth. Blend in milk, then add in eggs one at a time. Incorporate well.
5. Mix in cream, vanilla extract and flour until smooth. Pour filling into crust.
6. Bake in oven for 1 hour. Turn off oven and let it cool. Chill in fridge before serving.

USEFUL TIPS:

• All ingredients must be at room temperature.
• DO NOT overbeat the cream cheese.
• Put another pan filled with water on the bottom of the oven rack, underneath the pan while baking.
• DO NOT open oven door to check on the cake while it is still baking in the oven.
• Right after baking, run a knife around the rim of the pan. Then, leave it to cool in the oven.

Pardon the enthusiasm but I am really excited that I have finally set up this blog and am ready to receive some readers.

OK, so let’s get the ball rolling. One of the first main concerns I had (and I am sure a lot of working from home moms have too) when I saw all those work at home job postings online and in newspapers was which one was genuine? Which ones are Internet home business scams? And which ones are the latest scams?

I get quite skeptical every time I see work at home advertisements claiming that you can earn thousands of dollars a week, and from the job description, it sounds like you barely even have to lift a finger. It makes me feel very suspicious towards the job offering and my defense mechanism automatically kicks in and tells me to back away.

In the end, it could be the REAL deal but just because it seems too good to be true (thus causing it to sound like a “home business scam”), I ended up missing out on a golden opportunity. With that in mind, I searched online for some tips on how to smell a rat from a mile away and came across many useful articles. After an afternoon of research, I wrote an article on how you can determine whether an advertisement about work from home jobs for moms is a genuine opportunity or not.

Anyway, here is my article:

“In the world we live in now, working at home is becoming more and more popular due to the time flexibility it gives. A lot of people are hunting for work at home opportunities to either be the primary source of their income or as a secondary source. Unfortunately, as the popularity of working at home opportunities blossom, so does the number of work at home business scams. It has become extremely hard to figure out which ones are genuine. This causes a lot of people to be quite apprehensive when they hear the term work at home as they are scared of falling into a scam.

Avoid becoming a home business scam victim

Even though there are no guaranteed ways to ensure that a work at home job is legitimate but there are some pointers which you can try to help you protect yourself to some extent. In the first place, it is best to execute some research regarding the company offering the work at home job.
